Copper-glass migration

Copper-glass migration

Copper-glass migration requires adapted processes

It is clear that Telekom will switch off its copper network. But the extent to which migration to the fiber optic network should take place is also being discussed within the Gigabit Forum. Open Access can make an important contribution to creating competitive transitions and counteracting parallel networks. However, appropriate software solutions and interfaces are also essential for a successful migration.

The copper network, how much longer?

With fiber optic technology, completely new and fast ways of communication developed. In addition, the introduction of the Line ID makes it easier for all carriers when changing providers. The vulnerabilities of copper networks (increased attenuation/crosstalk on long cables, potential carryover or insulation problems) are now a thing of the past.

The fact that it is necessary to shut down the old 80s network is not a question in itself, but only a question of time. Because it stands in the way of the development towards a “gigabit society”.

By founding the Gigabit Forum of the Federal Network Agency and the leading expansion companies and industry associations, the aim is to clarify the issue of copper-glass migration together. For the participants of the
Gigabitforum's focus is on developing processes that ensure long-term planning security.

A competitive process is also important to the participants. If Telekom switches off the copper network, providers and wholesale service users should be able to create new offers for end customers as before and at competitive prices.

Open Access: an important building block in migration

In copper-glass migration, access to existing networks is essential. Carriers that are expanding in Germany use 90% of their own capital to close the gaps.

Open Access offers additional network utilization, especially in areas where there is low market penetration. For other areas where Open Access brings several competitors into the market, competitive pressure may increase. This presents network providers with new challenges. Because it then requires creative and innovative ideas to attract and retain customers.

Carriers need suitable software solutions

It's not just the established regulations that are necessary for the upcoming copper-glass migration. The right software solutions and interfaces also make it possible to react quickly enough to market changes when it comes to technology and process adjustments.

An integrated interface to network planning systems, for example, enables leads to be generated during pre-marketing. Coupled with the CRM system, preliminary contracts are easy to create and send to customers. The integration of the corresponding interfaces, for example S/PRI, forwards orders immediately via status changes. Whether as a service provider or client, it is important to have a clear representation of the business transactions. Correspondingly well-presented error messages are also important for quick troubleshooting. The varioSuite from dimari GmbH offers all of this and other functionalities. Whether you are a pure network provider or in the end customer business, open access and fiber optic connections require a suitable solution. This statement was published in the VATM yearbook 2023 on page 49.
