One of the most profitable mobile spectrum auctions in Europe in recent years has just come to an end: after a three-week bidding war, Deutsche Telekom, Vodafone and Telefónica bought new frequencies for the expansion of fast mobile Internet in Germany for a total price of 5.1 billion euros. As a result, a further foundation stone has been laid for mobile turbo surfing in the coming years for cell phone users. The President of the Federal Network Agency Jochen Homann explained: “Companies should now be able to make rapid investments in nationwide network expansion.”
For the first time in Europe, frequencies in the 700 megahertz range went under the hammer at the auction at the Federal Network Agency's branch in Mainz. Broadcasting is currently still using this frequency range, but release is planned in the coming years as part of the switch to DVB-T2. These frequencies are particularly suitable for use in rural regions. This means that the sale should make them fully usable for mobile communications and turbo surfing step by step by 2019.
